VueScan is an inexpensive program that works with most scanners to produce high-quality scans that have excellent color fidelity. It takes advantage of the advanced hardware capabilities of most scanners on the market today, and helps you do batch scanning while at the same time producing color-balanced and cropped images. VueScan is a standalone program. A TWAIN interface is not provided, it instead accesses the scanner hardware directly at low level. VueScan is often faster than the scanner's original software, both scan and focus. You can still use the scanner's original software if desired. Selecting negative film type helps correct the specific orange film. If you want VueScan to remove dust and scratches automatically you can activate the option infrared cleaning which is located on the filter tab. Simply set this to the desired strength. To apply such corrections to RAW scans you additionally have to modify the setting 'RAW output with' on the output tab. VueScan is here to help. Working with Scanned Images
VueScan is designed to save scanned images to JPEG files(by default) or TIFF files (optionally).
You can configure your favorite image editing program toautomatically open each image when a scan completes. Use the'Prefs|External viewer' option to control this.
On Mac OS X, you can set up the default viewer for .tif and .jpg files by:
- click once on a .tif or .jpg file
- choose 'File|Show info'
- choose 'Open with application'
- pick the application you want to use
- press the 'Change All' button
On Windows, you can set up the program that automaticallystarts with scanned images by setting up a file associationfor .tif and .jpg files. To create a file association, clickon a .tif or .jpg file with the right mouse button,select 'Open with', then 'Choose program'. Pick the programyou want to use, and also select 'Always use theselected program to open this kind of file'.
On Linux, use the 'Prefs|Viewer' option to select theapplication to use to view .tif and .jpg files.
Note that VueScan's technique for saving scans to a fileuses half as much memory as when using a TWAIN interfaceor a Photoshop Import Filter. Since VueScan is designedto work with very large, high-resolution images, it doesn'tinclude a TWAIN interface or Photoshop Import Filter.(You need to turn on the 'Prefs|Release memory' optionto release all image memory prior to sending the scanto the image viewer.)
Note also that VueScan's technique for saving scans to a fileallows you to edit an image while simultaneously scanning thenext image. Since some scans can take between 5 and 10 minutes,this results in significantly higher productivity than whenusing a TWAIN interface or a Photoshop Import Filter.
Scanning Roll of Film
If you're scanning many frames from the same roll of film,the following procedure will optimally set the CCDexposure and film base color (i.e. mask color):
- Set 'Input|More options' to 'All'
- Set 'Input|Media type'
- Insert film with most transparent area
- If 'Input|Lock exposure' visible
- Clear 'Input|Lock exposure'
- Press 'Preview' button
- Adjust cropping if necessary
- If 'Input|Lock exposure' visible
- Set 'Input|Lock exposure'

- If 'Input|Lock film base color' visible

Batch Scanning
To scan multiple images in a batch, set 'Input|Batch scan'to 'All' to scan all frames in a device, or set it to 'List'and type in the list of frames (i.e. '4 3 1' for frames 4,3 and 1, in that order).

If VueScan doesn't see your scanner on Mac OS X, first makesure that Apple System Profiler can see the scanner. If itdoesn't, try powering off the computer, powering off the scanner,powering on the scanner and then powering on the computer.
If you've installed the Canon software for N-series or LIDEscanners, you need to use the 'System Preferences' 'Login Items',select the ButtonManager for your scanner and press the Remove button.
If you're using an Epson 2400/2450 on Mac OS X, use theFirewire cable if you have problems with long startup timeswith USB.
To usePIE (Pacific Image Electronics) scannerswith VueScan, you need to first installCyberView X(not CyberView 32) in the default location.VueScan uses the CyberView X libraries to control the scanner.
If VueScan hangs when starting up, make sure that you don't havethe Internation Input Menu turned on - this causes problems withVueScan. This is in the International system preferences.Canon N-series and LIDE scanners are powered directly by the USB port.The USB port must provide a power supply of 500 mA. If you plugthe scanner into the USB port on a keyboard or other USB device,the scanner may not work properly. Attach the scanner directlyto a USB port on the computer or to a 500 mA self-powered USB hub.If you find that an N-series or LIDE scanner doesn't work with one ofyour USB ports, try plugging it into the other USB port.
If you're using Mac OS X 10.0.4 or 10.1 with a SCSI scanner, you may need todownload newer Mac OS X SCSI driversDon't install this driver on Mac OS X 10.2 or later, since this can causekernel crashes.
The driver for the beige G3 built-in SCSI has bugs on Mac OS X 10.1which have been fixed in 10.2. The driver for the beige G3 built-inSCSI is included with Mac OS X.
If you don't have a SCSI interface on your Macintosh, many usershave reported success using VueScan with theBelkinFireWire/SCSI Adapter on Mac OS 9.x, 10.1 and 10.2.
If you've installed the beta UMAX OS X scanner software, you'll needto remove the extensions it installed in order to use VueScan.These are stored in /System/Library/Extensions. To temporarilyremove them, just rename the .kext file to .kext.save.

Canon N-series and LIDE scanners are powered directly by the USB port.The USB port must provide a power supply of 500 mA. If you plugthe scanner into the USB port on a keyboard or other USB device,the scanner may not work properly. Attach the scanner directlyto a USB port on the computer or to a 500 mA self-powered USB hub.If you find that an N-series or LIDE scanner doesn't work with one ofyour USB ports, try plugging it into the other USB port.

If you're using a Firewire or USB scanner on Mac OS 9.x, you may needto remove the extensions installed by the scanner vendor'ssoftware into the system folder. For instance, to get the NikonLS-4000 to work with Mac OS 9.x, remove all the extensions thatbegin with the word 'Nikon' (make sure you reboot with a filmholder inserted into the scanner).
To get the Minolta Scan Elite II to work on Mac OS 9.x, you'll need toremove the following extensions. The extensions for theScan Multi II are similar.

VueScan works on Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2K/XP, and works withall known SCSI cards. It also works fine withmultiple computers on a single SCSI bus (i.e. dualported access to scanners).
If you're using Windows 2000 or Windows XP and a SCSI scanner andif VueScan doesn't find your SCSI scanner, you may need todownload and install ASPI(you don't need this for USB scanners):
If VueScan won't start and you have Logitech MouseWareor a Logitech keyboard installed, try stoppingEM_EXEC.EXE and/or ITOUCH.EXE. There have been somereports of these two programs causing problems withVueScan. (These two Logitech programs cause problemsfor many other Windows programs as well.) Alternatively,try turning off the 'Smart Move' option in MouseWare.
If you have an ELSA Synergy III graphics card (or possiblyother NVideo graphics cards) and VueScan hangs whenstarting, you may need to disable the Desktop Managerthat comes with the card (the file that causes the problem isnvdesk32.dll).

You need to make sure all of the /dev/sg* devices areread/write accessible. To see what scanners are available,type 'cat /proc/scsi/scsi'.
Note that the Adaptec AVA-1505 SCSI card doesn'twork with a Nikon film scanner, and will cause ahard bus hang if you use VueScan with it. Thisis due to a bug in the aha152x driver. Another bugin this driver causes junk to be appended to theend of a raw scan when using the PhotoSmart. OtherSCSI cards seem to work fine with VueScan on Linux.
There have also been problems reported with theAdaptec AVA-2904E and the Canon FS2710, althoughthis combination works fine on Windows.
If you want to add or remove scsi devices withoutrebooting your system, use the following commands:To use USB scanners on Linux, you need to load thescanner driver and specify the vendor ID and product IDof the scanner. For instance, to recognize the Canon N670U, use'modprobe scanner vendor=0x04a9 product=0x220d'. Then type'cat /proc/bus/usb/devices' and make sure 'Driver=usbscanner'is enabled for your scanner.
If you're using Linux 2.4.12 or later, you don't needto do anything special to have the scanner auto-recognized.
If you're using an earler version of Linux with a USBscanner, set up the SCANNER0 environment variable to pointto /dev/usbscanner or /dev/usb/scanner (it needs to beread/write accessible), set up the SCANVID0 environmentvariable with the USB Vendor ID (VID) and set up theSCANPID0 environment variable with the USB Product ID (PID).You can support up to 8 USB scanners at a time by usingSCANNER1, SCANNER2, SCANVID1, SCANVID2, etc.

VueScan is a computer program for image scanning, especially of photographs, including negatives.[4] It supports optical character recognition (OCR) of text documents.[5][6] The software can be downloaded and used free of charge, but adds a watermark on scans until a license is purchased.
Purpose[edit]
VueScan is intended to work with a large number of image scanners (over 6000 in January 2020), excluding specialised professional scanners such as drum scanners, on many computer operating systems (OS), even if drivers for the scanner are not available for the OS. These scanners are supplied with device drivers and software to operate them, included in their price. A 2014 review considered that the reasons to purchase VueScan are to allow older scanners not supported by drivers for newer operating systems to be used in more up-to-date systems, and for better scanning and processing of photographs (prints; also slides and negatives when supported by scanners) than is afforded by manufacturers' software.[7] The review did not report any advantages to Vuescan's processing of documents compared to other software. When compared to SilverFast, a similar program, the reviewer considered the two programs to be comparable, with support for some specific scanners better in one or the other. Vuescan supports more scanners, with a single purchase giving access to the full range of both film and flatbed scanners, and costs less.
The Vuescan program can be used with its own drivers, or with drivers supplied by the scanner manufacturer, if supported by the operating system. Vuescan drivers can also be used without the Vuescan program by applications software that supports scanning directly, such as Adobe Photoshop, again enabling the use of scanners without current manufacturers' drivers.[8]
In 2019 when Apple Inc. released macOS Catalina, they removed support for running 32-bit programs, including 32-bit drivers for scanning equipment. In response, Hamrick released VueScan 9.7, effectively saving thousands of scanners from being rendered obsolete.[9]
Overview[edit]
VueScan enables the user to modify and fine-tune the scanning parameters. The program uses its own independent method to interface with scanner hardware, and can support many older scanners under computer operating systems for which drivers are not available, allowing old scanners to be used with newer platforms that do not otherwise support them.[10]
VueScan works with more than 2,400 different supported scanners and digital cameras on Windows, 2,100 on Mac OS X and 1,900 on Linux.[11]
VueScan is supplied as one downloadable file for each operating system, which supports the full range of scanners. Without the purchase of a license the program runs in fully functional demonstration mode, identical to Professional mode, except that watermarks are superimposed on saved and printed images. Purchase of a license removes the watermark, with a standard license also providing updates for one year, and a professional license with some additional features.
As distributed VueScan supports optical character recognition of English documents; 32 additional language packages are available on its Web site.[12]
In September 2011, VueScan co-developer Ed Hamrick said that he was selling US$3 million per year of VueScan licenses.[13]
